Edwin & The Bear

A short Film by Sarah Maxine Caulfield, made possible by Ideastap Funding.
THE END OF ANIMATING
My final pile of paper. My Pencil is nearly all gone, but lasted the duration of drawing, it served me well.
So there’s no more drawing to do Boo, but tomorrow, with a little final editing, Edwin & The Bear 2011 will be complete, Horray!
Keir is just wrapping up the sound, and my two freelancers stormed the clean up, with Danny Roberts from Sons of Graham doing a very fine job as my main editor, he completely saved my bacon as I underestimated the work load, and with great support from Dan Caulfield- to neat to quit on perfection, just what I like!
It’s nice to be drawing out the titles. I just watched back the last full film I made, More Than There Is 2010 and was intrigued to find that I thought it was a bit shoddy now, so that must show my improvement, which is brilliant!
I got a bit poorly recently with eye strain and migraines, probably from all the drawing, so I haven’t done as many improvements as my mentor advised, which is a shame, but I think I can get away with it for now.
Tomorrow will be a beautiful day.

Hello again, long time no blog.
So my animation pile has grown massively, as you can see.
Because I’ve worked to hard and stormed through so much animation I’m going to have plenty of time for improvements and won’t need to get freelance help which is brilliant because then my film will just have my own name on it and Keir’s for sound production.
I’m not going to post the animation again till the final version can be released, but it’s improved a lot and I’m looking forward to seeing it finished by Christmas.
That’s all really, except that my pencil is nearly all gone, and I should be seeing Jeroen again next weekend hopefully, which is sure to bring even more possible improvements.
All is well.

Hello there!

So here’s a bit more of my film to see, I may not post too much more- maybe little snippits- so that the final film is a surprise!

I tried changing up the walk cycles for the dog and the bear which Jeroen and I went through, but I’m not sure that I’m much happier with them yet, they’re both really fast and a bit strange… anyway it’s also got a bit of new work on the end which is quite nice to see!

I’m still plodding along, my pencil is getting smaller… I was bad and tried to do some corrections now rather than at the end, so I won’t do it again because I’m not sure it paid off as perhaps I rushed it and it still needs more review time and practice, I’ll have it all down soon though!

A lovely thing that I’ve figured out is that I’ve done 60seconds of this film in 4 and a half weeks, so if I carry on like this I could have the draft done in another 7weeks, leaving me a good 4weeks left to add in details, backgrounds and to do lots of improvements, which is a very good amount of time, very very good.

Visiting Jeroen at Tandem, and going through my frames on Flash!

Hello!

So this video shows the First Draft Animation I’ve done so far. I went through it with my mentor Jeroen Jaspaert from Tandem Films over the weekend, and got a lot of feedback for improving it.

We agreed in the end that it would be best for me to continue animating, taking on board what was discussed, so that the next batch of animation will have improved- then according to how much time is left, I can come back and improve it.

The main things we talked about was the balance between me making my own animation and observing real life bears, blind people and dogs. So the walk and run cycles are the main things that need work. The man needs to be lead by his stick tapping, the dog needs to jump less high and jerky and the bear needs more weight and to be slower. I also can improve my silhouettes.

There were also smaller things from our meeting which really helped, for example we put my film in to flash, and at Tandem them have screens which are tablets so he can draw straight in to flash and we drew over my frames so I could see what really helps to change the feel of the character. He also showed me BBC Motion Gallery which looks really helpful, suggested a slight texture to my film, and photocopied me some Muybridge reference material from a book he had.

Secondary changes include things like, more resistance when taking the collar off, more negative space to make the staging clearer, and more excitement and movement in the dog at first meeting with the bear.

The most interesting thing I found was that I didn’t realize how much I used straight lines where circular or figure of eight guides would move the frames in a smoother way.

For all of these improvements, Jeroen did say that he liked it, thought it was, good, was glad I wasn’t trying to be like someone else, and that if I focus on really making sure that I have got what I want out of the animation rather than settling to soon, then it’s really going to improve, but I still need to be cautious of time.

When I’ve got my disposable camera developed, I can post photos from my trip to Tandem along with the work Jeroen did to show me improvements to my frames using Flash.

Over and out.

Here’s a frame for you :D just the one!

So I’ve sped up to 4/5 seconds per day recently, because I’m doing bits with only one character and/or less movement, but I’ve done this many drawings in the 2 and a half weeks so far, and I’ve got about 40 seconds of animation now, not including backgrounds, dog lead and a bit of dust cleaning. So I’m seeing Jeroen on Saturday and after that I will post the 40 second animation for you to see with feedback and notes from our meeting. I’m so flipping glad to be animating again!

Salut!

Alo, I have been doing some animating and loving it, it’s not turning out too badly as well which is brilliant. I have been averaging between 2.8 and 3.2 seconds of animation per day, with one day a week for editing and compositing and 2 hours on a Monday evening capturing all of my frames in the dark. I will post up some of my animation after going through it with my Mentor, who I will be meeting at Tandem films on Saturday 24th, which I can’t wait for! So it’s going very well. Horray!

I’ve managed to whip out a better animatic with some of the new raw sounds from Keir, which demonstrates what I’m getting at a bit better, it’s got a few more keys and breakdowns now, I could keep adding detail, but as I’m the only one animating from it at the moment, I’m going to prioritize getting the animation done.

So Monday morning- my first proper day at work on this film looks bright and sunny. I’ll dope out the first scene I’m going to start on and begin building up animated bits, can’t wait!

I’ve also had contact with Jeroen and will be heading over to Tandem Films to see him soon! I’m also going to meet up with some animation friends of mine to see what they think. It’s going to be great!

So I proposed this production schedule to Ideastap and they OKayed it, however in the Terms and Conditions in the Funding Contract it looks like the film needs to be shown to them completed by the first week of January…
So now, I’m swapping Weeks 14/15 for finishing up with freelance help, so there will be none left to do my hand in at the beginning of January.
I have also cut the film plan down from a 3 minute film to a 2 and a half minute film, to be able to complete it in time- this has been demonstrated in the animatic which will soon be perfected. I’ll also animate my face off I guess, but what’s new!

Hello

Hello there again,

I am back and ready to make a ridiculously rad film. HORRAY ANIMATION!

Keir is nearly up to sniz on the sound, so it shouldn’t be too long till I’ve got that to work from, in the mean time I’m going to do any bits I can do without having to have the sound, and some character testing.

Jeroen hasn’t managed to get back to me yet about what we will do, I was hoping to go through my animatic with him, so we will see what happens with that, maybe I’ll have time to do some little animation clips before we get a chance to meet up, and then get some feedback on them which would be lovely.

p.s I’m Sarah Caulfield now, new business name. Good name for an Animator I think…

Next

So while Keir sorts out my sound, I’m going to go and get married, then as of the beginning of September I can get animating using his sound. Can’t wait.

I just got introduced to my Mentor, Jeroen Jaspaert, who ideastap contacted for me. Jeroen is a brilliant Director at Tandem Films, is part of the Simon’s Cat team, and his work shows amazing comedic timing and extremely strong character design and execution. I couldn’t have asked for a greater help. I hope he enjoys mentoring me, and benefits from it too. He lives in Islington, so I’m not sure what we will do or how we will do it, but I’m sure it will be great! http://ifeeltoooldforthis.blogspot.com/

So my first four weeks of work have happened, I only planned this short time (as I am still in employment at The Lab Newport so I’m juggling the two), to get a rough animatic with example sounds ready for my sound man Keir Doherty to create me some high quality sound bytes ready for when I begin work on the film in September.

I chose Keir Doherty, who also went to University of Wales Newport, as he did such a brilliant job working with me on my Degree Film, he is very reliable, passionate and as much a perfectionist as myself, his work is outstanding, and I’m so glad I can pay him this time! www.keirdoherty.com

I made sure that the animatic drawings would be reused, so that the time spent making the animatic could prove more useful, so the animatic shows most of the keyframes. I find key framing much slower than animating.

I’m apprehensive to show the animatic too much as it is not paced correctly yet and has terrible example sound which luckily Keir says is enough information for him to get creating.

I’ve asked him to give me the sound in clips so that I can do a quick, good, little re-time just before starting animation, just to be clear of the timing I want, which is so essential in animation and for a film which is going for subtlety.

When the first installment of Ideastap funding came through this month, I started by getting hold of my studio equipment. I got an amazing light box from chromacolour with some lovely extras like punched paper and brilliant pencils. I’m most excited about the pencils- I really like good pencils. I also got a Rostrum with digital lights from Animation Supplies, this was more expensive than the light box kit, but I’m really looking forward to not having to scan in every drawing I do.
I’m moving in to a new house as I am getting married soon, so we have found a place with a spare room for me to set up MY FIRST STUDIO. Horray! So it is all now set up ready for when we move in and start working after getting married in August.
I already have a Canon 550D to capture my frames and an imac to edit on, I will be using Photoshop and AfterEffects.
